Minimalism

I’ve been thinking design lately – and I don’t mean design as I normally do around here. Rather, I mean visual design, graphic design, that sort of a thing. Doubtlessly, that has much to do because I have a number of projects to work on currently involving a fair amount of visual design. I’ve certainly noticed something about my standards for design: I’m a minimalist.

This site is likely a fair representation for that. It is clean, it is readable, it has plenty of white space, it uses a friendly color scheme, and the design of it doesn’t overtake the content, which is far more important than the actual look of the site. Yet, the design manages to give off a certain elegance all the same. Well, at least, I certainly hope it does that.

I do seem to notice a fair amount of design that I see these days doesn’t seem quite so minimal. I don’t even necessarily mean that just as far as visual design goes either. Programs have getting larger while giving relatively few benefits,  UI design has gone a bit toward being flashy over being just simply usable at times… Yet, at the same time, mobile computing is getting pretty huge, mobile phones are getting more powerful and are looking at incorporating huge amounts of new features, and a lot of people seem to be more content with getting a low end machine that just does what they want it to these days.

Perhaps I’ll be seeing more and more designs – visual and otherwise – that I’ll find matching up to my preferred style.
