Playing in the MUD

A little over a month ago I started playing a MUD called Threshold . It was the 30th anniversary of Richard Bartle’s original and I had been considering playing another one again. I figured it’d be an interesting experiment, since I was also playing Warhammer Online at the same time as well. Plus, with a MUD, I could multitask pretty easily along with it.

So, since then I haven’t played Warhammer Online in about a month. Go figure.

I’ve actually been rather impressed with the amount of depth that the game has had. Its actually quite simple – combat is pretty straight forward, most of the gameplay systems are, over all, quite simple. I would say that the Iron Realm’s MUDs I’ve played were probably a touch more technical… Yet, there’s been a certain charm in playing something that’s entirely community supported and otherwise entirely free. Its done out of the passion of the administrator, which is pretty neat. It also is roleplaying mandatory, which has been a whole different experience than I normally get in online games.

So, I’d say the experiment has gone pretty well. It certainly has been one of the most community-focused online games I’ve played in a long time, which is something I’ve been missing a bit when I play a lot of games these days. That aspect always seems… lacking, somehow.
